Without ventilation, a typical residential attic can reach as high as 150 degrees during summer, which can lead to all sorts of problems down the road. Fortunately, cooling down your attic doesn’t require a roof replacement. General contractor 3JM Exteriors, Inc discusses how you can cool your attic down for the summer.
Proper Attic Ventilation
A well-insulated attic tends to trap heat and moisture if not properly ventilated. This doesn’t mean that you should reduce attic insulation. Rather, your attic should have a proper attic ventilation system. A typical system consists of ridge vents, with soffits sized to match. Since heat tends to rise, heat (along with moisture) is passively vented out the ridges. The resulting air pressure pulls in fresh, cool air through the soffit, creating continuous airflow.
Ideally, the attic temperature should be more or less the same as outdoor temperatures. Since the roofing structure is made of wood, being exposed to different temperatures at the same time can cause warping. This can lead to permanent structural damage that may require extensive roof repair, if not a complete replacement. The excess heat may also damage exterior components that may require siding repair. Proper attic ventilation also helps prevent ice dams from forming during winter.
How to Cool Down Your Attic
If your attic is noticeably hotter and more humid compared to the outdoors, you definitely need proper ventilation. Check the area near the soffit for airflow. You may need to have ridge vents installed or upgraded. A capable roofing contractor can help you determine the vent size appropriate for your roof.
Large, sprawling attic spaces may need to have ventilators and exhaust fans installed. While electric options are commonplace, you can install solar-powered fans so the attic doesn’t impact indoor temperatures in case of a power outage.
