How Will You Know If Your Home Is Properly Insulated?

Home insulation is very important. It determines whether your home stays comfortable, regardless of the weather. It also determines the amount of money you’ll have to spend on cooling and heating bills. That said, it’s imperative that you, as a homeowner, should know if your home is properly insulated. Properly insulated homes are more comfortable to live in, and won’t require your HVAC to work overtime.

But how will you know if your home is properly insulated? According to the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA), about 90% of homes in the U.S. are under-insulated. This means nine out of 10 people live in a poorly insulated home. Roof repair experts from 3JM Exteriors, Inc. share some things you’ll need to look for (or do) in order to find out if you’re one of the nine with under-insulated homes or that one with a properly insulated abode.

High Energy Bills?

Take a good look at your current energy bill, and compare it to your energy bills from a year ago. If you see any major increases, chances are your home isn’t properly insulated. Be sure, however, to note if you added more power-hungry appliances or have had a change of lifestyle that involved using more electricity.

Roof repair pros say that if your bill has dramatically increased, chances are that your heating and cooling system keeps working overtime to condition the air around you. If your home is under-insulated, the conditioned air will simply escape, forcing the HVAC to work harder.

Touch Test

The touch test is a surefire way to determine if your home needs more insulation. Touch the walls and floors inside your home when it’s cold outside. They will feel warm and dry to the touch if there’s proper insulation. Conversely, they will feel damp and cold if they’re not properly insulated.

Comfort Test

Proper insulation prevents indoor air from leaking out, and outdoor air from entering in. These results in a more comfortable indoor environment. If the room doesn’t feel as comfortable as it should –it feels drafty, temperatures vary from room to room and critters come from nowhere– insulation might not be enough.
